Organizing quick tips (Fall / Winter 2007)

Hidden Storage Space

Store items you only need access to occasionally under beds and sofas by placing them in plastic bins made for this purpose. Seasonal and travel items, mending supplies, tools, extra shoes and items bought in bulk (like toilet tissue) are just some of the things that may fit under your furniture.

If your sofa has a fabric skirt, the bins will not be visible, but the bins may be obtrusive with styles that don’t have a skirt.

Just don’t forget you put the things there!

Bathroom Helpers

An organized and efficient bathroom makes for an easy morning. Maybe one of these ideas can make finding what you need easier:

  • If you have space, a kitchen cart can be an excellent storage place for your bathroom. Towels can be placed on the shelves and bottles of cleaning items and supplies can go in a bin on the shelves. The top can be used as a vanity.
  • Also if space permits, consider a coat tree in the bathroom to hang robes, clothes and towels.
  • Check your local craft/art supply store for storage bin alternatives for make up and toiletry caddies.
  • Place a magnetic strip on the inside of the medicine cabinet and attach tweezers, nail clippers or other metal items.
  • Hang a cosmetics travel bag or shoe storage bag with clear pockets on the back of the door to store items like extra toothpaste, small towels and toiletries.
  • Shelf units made to fit over the toilet tank are useful, but a small, lightweight shelf unit (rattan or wicker) that can sit right on the tank is useful too. Measure the top of the toilet tank and the wall space above it to see what will fit.
